One of the many reasons Taj Mahal looks breath-taking is the intricate Marble Inlay work done on its walls. Marble Inlay is a closelt protected art and only a few people are able to do justice with it. Its process involved delicate engraving and cutting shapes by hand.
The inlay work began around the 16th century on delicate precious stones in the workshops of Florence in Italy. It was called Pietra Dura, meaning hard stone. This artform came to be appreciated by many people all across the globe and It began to appear on a range of decorative panels in the form of floral motifs or hand carved birds, from table tops to presents from travellers to the Mughal emperors in faraway India.
Of all the Mughal Emperors, Shah Jahan was the patron of the architecture and arts. For him no amount of money was equivalent to creating an architectural wonder which would be appreciated by the whole world and would stand the test of centuries of time. Many of his architectures show the pietra dura work and above all, the marble of railings and the main floor of Taj Mahal pay a very close resemblance to pietra dura.
Surface of Marble Inlay:
white marble from Makrana, Rajasthan or Creama Marble from Italy is the most preferred type of Marble for this job. Black kaddappa stone or green marble can also be used.
Inlay process:
A floral motif or any other design is cut out on a brass sheet and is then placed on the marble and drawn. Then the marble is carved out, slices of coloured stones are delicately laid on the marble with adhesives.
To provide the charm and shine to the masterpiece polish work is done on it.
